Abstract

2-PHENYL-ETHANOL (PEA) has been shown to induce unbalanced growth in bacteria. Originally, this was thought to be due to selective inhibition of DNA synthesis1. Recently, it has been shown that in Escherichia coli the primary effect is the inhibition of mRNA formation2. The inhibition of DNA synthesis can be explained by inhibition of a mRNA involved in the synthesis of DNA3. This communication describes the extent to which 2-phenyl-ethanol and its derivatives are able to inhibit in vitro synthesis of DNA.
