Increased Histidine Decarboxylase Activity of Rat Lung in Endotoxin Shock

Abstract

IN 1959 Schayer reported that when rat skin was treated with compound 48/80 the histidine decarboxylase activity increased1. In later investigations he found that a similar effect was produced by various other stimuli, such as endotoxin and other toxins or even prolonged exposure to a warm environment2–8. Kahlson and his colleagues9–18 also found increased formation of histamine in rapidly growing tissues. These reports and the conclusions drawn by the authors were opposed by West and his colleagues at the International Congress of Physiology in Leyden 1962, because they had been unable to confirm them by non-isotopic methods19,20.
