The Fujiwara Reaction : Some Observations on the Mechanism

Abstract

WHEN certain 1 : 1 : 1-trichloro-compounds are heated in the presence of pyridine and aqueous caustic alkali, a red colour is imparted to the pyridine layer1,2. The reaction is extremely sensitive. The nature of the red material has not been fully elucidated, but the following mechanism has been proposed3:
