Haemoglobin Polymorphism in the Orang Utan and an Animal with Four Major Haemoglobins

Abstract

IN examining haemolysates from ten orang utans from the Yerkes Regional Primate Center collection we found four different haemoglobin phenotypes including one in which three major haemoglobin zones were present. The samples, kindly supplied by Prof. G. Bourne and Dr. J. Moor-Jankowski, were first analysed on starch gels using a tris-ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) buffer system1 and were later investigated by hybridization2,3 of the component haemoglobins with various other haemoglobins.
