Hypervitaminosis A and Hyperostosis of the Cat

Abstract

A NATURALLY occurring, crippling, bone disease of the cat has been recognized in Uruguay1 and in Queensland, Australia3,13. A feature of the disease is the development of exostoses in various parts of the skeleton, particularly the cervical vertebrae, forelimbs and the thoracic cage. The resultant postural changes and musculo-skeletal deformities produce a very characteristic clinical syndrome in affected animals. The condition has been diagnosed mainly in adult cats, 2–5 years of age, with no histoiy of previous traumatic injury or juvenile osteodystrophy.
