Abstract
FURTHER investigations have been made of the β-type interlamellar sorption complexes formed by graphitic acid with normal alcohols1–3. We find that the formation of β-complexes (chain perpendicular to layer) or α-complexes (chain parallel to layer) with any given alcohol depends on the method of formation and pretreatment of the graphitic acid4. We have evidence that this statement may be true also for the α- and β-complexes of montmorillonite.
