Abstract
OUR work on the phospholipids of the brain of the adult rat during post-natal development led us to examine their distribution in the various sub-cellular fractions. Tyrrell and Richter1, as well as Debuch and Stammler2, have noted the distribution of phospholipids in the brain nuclei; Biran and Bartley3, August, Davison and Williams4 their distribution in mitochondria and micro-somes; Harth, Borkowski, Mardell and Mandel5 their distribution in nuclei, mitochondria, microsomes and myelin sheaths; finally, Patterson and Fineau6 their distribution in the various sub-cellular fractions of the optic nerve. In the work recorded here, we present results obtained from the examination of the distribution of sphingomyelin in the various sub-cellular fractions of rat brain.
