Abstract
MANY workers have sought to describe the size and shape of farm animals objectively by making measurements on live animals, while a number of others have proposed various combinations of measurements as a measure of body size and/or conformation, for example, Lush1 (beef cattle), Cook et al.2 (dairy Shorthorns), Berges3 (beef cattle), Rae4 (New Zealand Romney Marsh), Turner et al.5 (Australian Merino), Phillips and Dawson6, Hazel and Kline7, Price et al.6 (pigs). While the significance of cannon bone measurement as an index of total bone-weight of the carcass has been reported for sheep (Hammond9, Verges10, Palsson11,12) and pigs (McMeekan13), there are no reports of cannon bone measurements for live sheep being used as an index of carcass characteristics.
