Abstract

THE preparation of technetium hexachloride by the direct action of chlorine on the metal has been described in a recent communication1. As the pentachloride is the highest chloride known for rhenium2 the unusual situation arose of a second row transition metal showing a higher co-valency than the corresponding third row metal and it was suggested that rhenium hexachloride should exist1. This communication describes the preparation and characterization of rhenium hexachloride.
