Abstract
THE chief forms of storage iron in the human body are ferritin and hæmosiderin1. Ferritin was first identified by Laufberger (1937) as an unusual iron-containing protein. Chemical analysis, electron microscopy, and immunochemical studies have shown that the ferritin moiety consists of a homogeneous and immunologically distinct protein matrix (apoferritin) with varying numbers of ferric hydroxide micelles interspersed in the interstices2.
