Abstract
THE low breaking strength of normal glasses is usually regarded as being due to surface imperfections, and previous workers, particularly Greene1, have directed attention to the increase in strength which occurs when the glass surface is etched with hydrofluoric acid. By measuring the rate at which a particular etching solution removes material from a glass surface it is possible to study the strength of etched specimens as a function of the depth of material removed from the surface. Such a study may give some information about the size and nature of the surface imperfections.
