Abstract

MANY attempts have been made to relate the physical and chemical properties of the metals to the toxicity of their salts. The most successful hypothesis, first proposed by Mathews1, has been that the toxicity of the ions is related to the electrode potential of the metal. Jones2 corroborated this hypothesis when he established that the logarithm of the toxic concentration of some 18 metal ions, to the stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, and the planarian, Polycelis nigra, was approximately a linear function of the standard electrode potential.
