Abstract

IN a recent communication, Ray1 has given the equations: and which he then combines and discusses. In these equations, the left-hand side of (1) is proportional to the sensitivity of a catharometer ; λ1 and λ2 are the thermal conductivities of carrier gas and vapour respectively; λ12 is the thermal conductivity of the mixture of the carrier gas with a fraction (assumed here to be molar) x2 of vapour. Authors discussing this communication2 all appear to assume that equation 2 is sufficiently accurate to enable them to use it in discussion of experimental results. This assumption is not correct.
