Quantitative Determination of Acetylcholinesterase Activity in Individual Nerve Cells

Abstract

MOST of our knowledge concerning the topical distribution of cholinesterases in the mammalian nervous system is derived from studies on tissue sections by various histochemical methods. In order to obtain more detailed information about the localization of this enzyme in the neurone, a modified thiocholine method1 has now been applied to single cells dissected out from living tissues2. Quantitative data regarding the cholinesterase contents in individual nerve cells are, however, still lacking.
