Abstract

THE enzymatic synthesis of acetylcholine in the mammalian organism is inextricably linked with the general metabolism, especially with the general acetylating reactions. Hence it may be more rational to restrict the term ‘choline acetylase’ in its application to an enzyme which catalyses the reaction between choline and ‘active acetate’ or acetyl-coenzyme A, as shown in the following equation: Acetyl-CoA + choline = acetylcholine + CoA.
