Dissimilation of Citric Acid by Bacterial Extracts

Abstract

Aerobacter aerogenes is able to utilize citric acid as sole source of carbon for growth, and from an analysis of fermentation liquors, Deffner and Franke1 and Brewer and Werkman2 concluded that citrate is dissimilated to oxaloacetate and acetate as initial products. Dagley and Dawes3 have confirmed earlier observations on the adaptive nature of the dissimilating enzyme and have shown that cells have maximum activity when harvested from anaerobic media in which citric acid is limiting for growth: media used in the present work fulfil these conditions.
