Abstract

INVESTIGATIONS in this department into the nature of the chrome tanning process have involved the preparation of various modified forms of collagen. Among possible modifications, the decarboxylation of collagen appeared to be of interest, although it has received scant attention from previous workers. Fox1 reported that Grignard reagents had been used for decarboxylating an esterified polypeptide with the formation of a tertiary alcohol; more recently, Fromageot et al.2 have used lithium aluminium hydride to reduce the terminal carboxyl groups of insulin to primary alcohols.
