Abstract

IN the past few years the dissociation of insulin in acid and neutral solution has been extensively studied. Although most of this work has pointed towards a minimum molecular weight of 12,000 from osmotic pressures1, sedimentation2,3 and light scattering4 measurements, we raised the possibility of a value of 6,000 as the lower limit, from the extrapolation of sedimentation and diffusion data5. This value has been confirmed by surface monolayer studies6 and by Craig and Harfenist's method7. Further, chemical analysis does not preclude it8.
