Abstract
A SPECIMEN of psilomelane (BM.69,160) from Schneeberg, Saxony, was kindly made available for examination by the Department of Mineralogy, British Museum (Natural History). This material forms minute monoclinic crystals with a = 9.56, b = 2.88, c = 13.85 A., β = 92° 30′, probable space group A 2/m. These values are a refinement of those previously reported by Vaux1. The unit cell contains two empirical formula units, Ba0.64(Mn,R)5O10.1.36 H2O, giving dcalc. = 4.82, dobs. = 4.71; the ions R comprise Mn2+ and traces of other metals substituted for Mn4+.
