Abstract

SCOPOLETIN is a normal constituent of many plants and is responsible for the blue fluorescence of oat roots1. An accumulation of this substance has been observed in tobacco2 and potato3,4 plants suffering from certain virus diseases, in topped tobacco5 and in plants treated with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid6. When applied to the growing tip of oat rootlets, it was found to be the most active of all the coumarin derivatives tested in causing inhibition of root growth7. Coumarin is believed to exert its effect by combining with sulphydryl enzymes concerned with growth8.
