Abstract

APART from the fact that Bosworth and Sisson1 established the presence of arachidonic acid in butterfat, there is little, if any, precise information (cf. Bosworth and Brown2) regarding the nature of other C20–22 unsaturated acids. The purpose of this communication is to record the results of work in progress which support Hilditch's opinion3 in regard to the C20–22 unsaturated acids of butterfat that, “while arachidonic acid may be the chief component, there are probably other polyethenoid (tetra- and pentaene) acids present, possibly of the C22 as well as of the C20 series”.
