Abstract

Dingemanse, Huis in 't Veld and Hartogh-Katz1 recently described the isolation from human urine of a compound, "17-ketosteroid II", which they suggested was an androsten-3(α)-ol-17-one. Many of the reactions reported for this substance indicated that it might be i-androsten-6-ol-17-one, which has already been obtained by Butenandt and Suranyi2 from the p-toluenesulphonate of dehydro-iso-androsterone. We have repeated the preparation of Butenandt and Suranyi, and have confirmed the properties recorded for this substance and for the corresponding diketone obtained on oxidation. The properties of "17-ketosteroid II" and i-androstenolone are compared in the accompanying table.
