Abstract

IN our letter on “Coupled oxidation of ascorbic acid and hæmochromogens”1, we had observed the formation of a hæmatin compound with an absorption band at 639 mμ during the coupled oxidation of pyridine-hæmochromogen and ascorbic acid. The same compound was formed by action of hydrogen peroxide on the hæmochromogen in presence of ascorbic acid. On reduction it gave a hæmochromogen with the bands of protohæmochromogen. From these observations we had concluded that the compound was a hydrogen peroxide compound of proto hæmochromogen.
