Abstract

METAL ions are involved in the distinction between ribonucleosides and deoxynucleosides in biochemical processes. For example, RNA polymerase incorporates only ribonucleotides into RNA in the presence of magnesium ions, whereas manganese ions may bring about the misincorporation of deoxy-nucleotides1. Therefore it is of interest to examine ways in which metal ions can distinguish between these two types of molecules.
