Abstract

Background: Sexual dysfunction includingerectile dysfunction (ED) is common in patientswith end stage renal disease on peritonealdialysis (PD). Prevalence and determinants ofED in these patients has not been wellcharacterized.Patients and methods: Prevalence of ED in44 patients on chronic PD was assessed usingthe International Index of Erectile Function(IIEF-5) commonly called Sexual HealthInventory for Men (SHIM) score. Theassociations between ED and other medicalconditions was also assessed. Results: Prevalence of ED was high at88%. Mean age of all patients was 61.8± 13.9 years. Thirty-two patients werehypertensive, 19 of them had coronary arterydisease and 13 patients were diabetics. Allpatients with diabetes had ED. Age and diabeteswere found to be significantly associated withED.Conclusion: ED is highly prevalent inpatients on chronic PD. Increasing age anddiabetes were associated with higher percentageof ED.
