Plantations of Gmelina arborea in southern Mexico

Abstract

PetroCam is a forest products company with land in Campeche, Mexico. It has established 1300 ha of Gmelina arborea (gmelina) on degraded pasturelands and is currently establishing 300 ha of plantations year−1 on an 8-year rotation. Seeds for the program come from a locally developed land race with origins from India. Trees are planted at 3 × 3 m spacing, are fertilized 15 days after establishment, and are pruned and thinned several times during the rotation. Average productivity using the current landrace material is approximately 25 m3 ha−1 year−1. The end product is high quality furniture for export. Genetic material from CAMCORE, North Carolina State University will greatly broaden the genetic base of this program in the future.

Resumen. PetroCam es una compañía de productos forestales con terrenos en Campeche, México, la cual ha establecido 1300 ha de Gmelina arborea en terrenos de pastoreo degradados. En la actualidad está estableciendo anualmente, 300 ha de plantaciones con un período de rotación de 8 años. Las semillas para el programa provienen de una ‘raza local’ desarrollada localmente, y originaria de la India. Los árboles en la plantación se establecen con un espaciamiento de 3 × 3 m, son fertilizados 15 días después de su establecimiento, y son podados y entresacados varias veces durante la rotación. La productividad promedio de la raza local es de aproximadamente 25 m3/ha/año. El producto final son muebles de alta calidad, tipo exportación. En un futuro, el material genético procedente de CAMCORE, en la Universidad Estatal de Carolina del Norte, ampliará sustancialmente la base genética de este program.
