Abstract
Smurfit Cartón de Colombia, a pulp and paper company based in Cali, established six genetic and growth and yield trials of Gmelina arborea (gmelina) in the North and Southwest Regions of Colombia. The objective of the trials was to evaluate the potential productivity of gmelina as a source of raw material for corrugated medium. The trials were evaluated at age 3 years for survival, height and total volume (over bark). Variation in tree height and volume among the six sites were the result of differences in soil texture (a surrogate for water holding capacity) and natural soil drainage, which are the main soil characteristics that affect gmelina productivity. The most productive plots (Lote 80, 37.0 m3/ha/yr and La Estancia, 31.6 m3/ha/yr) were those with loamy–clay or clay textures on well-drained sites that received between 1000 and 1300 mm of rainfall per year. The least productive site (Vanessa, 15.5 m3/ha/yr) was one with a clay texture that was poorly drained and received more than 2000 mm of annual precipitation.
