Mode of Superfluid Condensation in the High-Temperature Superconductors and Its Implications for Their Applications in High Fields

Abstract

We examine spectroscopic data on the cuprates in light of theories of the BCS to Bose–Einstein crossover. We conclude that they are rather on the BSC side, but not very far from the crossover. This is the regime that is least favorable for applications in high fields. The exception appears to be YBCO, which at optimum doping and beyond is really a BCS superconductor. Bringing other cuprates into the BCS regime is a valuable objective.
