Chemical Interaction between Sm2Fe17 and Ammonia

  • Published:
Inorganic Materials Aims and scope

Abstract

The interaction between Sm2Fe17 and ammonia in the presence of NH4Cl (10 wt % relative to Sm2Fe17) as an activator is studied at initial NH3 pressures from 0.6 to 0.8 MPa and temperatures from 150 to 500°C. The results indicate that, depending on the reaction temperature in the Sm2Fe17–NH3 system, both hydriding of the parent intermetallic phase and disproportionation resulting in the formation of another hydride phase may occur. The reaction products are found to consist of fine particles. The magnetic properties of the products of Sm2Fe17 nitriding in ammonia are studied.
