Abstract
The formation of ZrO2 nanocrystals during heat treatment of amorphous ZrO(OH)2 is studied. The results indicate that the high-temperature phases of ZrO2 (T-ZrO2 and trace amounts of C-ZrO2) can be produced and stabilized at 350–375°C in nanoparticles with a size of coherently scattering domains on the order of 20 nm. Heating to above 500–600°C leads to the formation and growth of the stable phase M-ZrO2. The nature of the starting zirconium salt is shown to have a significant effect on the thermal decomposition of zirconium hydroxides.
