Mössbauer spectroscopy of the high-pressure phase of pure iron;ɛ-Fe

Abstract

Using a diamond anvil cell, the57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy of the high-pressure phase of pure iron,ɛ-Fe at 20 GPa, has been re-examined at 4.5 K under external magnetic fields up to 7 T. The magnitude of the hyperfine magnetic fields depends linearly on the external magnetic fields,H ext. It implies that there is no induced hyperfine field due to the local magnetic moment andɛ-Fe under 20 GPa at 4.5 K is determined as a Pauli paramagnet.

On the occasion of the 80th birthday of Hendrik de Waard

This paper is dedicated to Prof. Hendrik de Waard on the occasion of his 80th birthday and we all hope his continuous good health, success and happiness. One of us, S. Nasu, presented a poster concerning high-pressure Mössbauer study ofɛ-Fe andα-Fe2O3 at the time of ICAME1985 in Leuven of Belgium with Prof. Emeritus F. E. Fujita and was honored to get a poster-prize from Prof. Hendrik de Waard. After the conference we have continued to perform the experiments and at this moment, 18 years after the conference, we can perform high-pressure Mössbauer measurements under external high magnetic field up to 7 T.
