Abstract

The approaches most universally applied to the design of radial optical gradient-index elements from glasses through ion exchange are analyzed. A new method is proposed for choosing both the optimum initial glass intended for use in ion exchange and the optimum content of exchanging components at the axis and the lateral surface of a cylinder in order to achieve a parabolic distribution of the refractive index. The proposed method is based on the concept of mole-additive modification of the refractive index.
