4–Methyl–1–Pentene Oligomers as Thickening Agents for Lube Oils

  • Published:
Chemistry and Technology of Fuels and Oils Aims and scope

Abstract

Oligomerization of 4–methyl–1–pentene in the presence of aluminum chloride and the possibility of using the oligomers obtained as thickening agents for petroleum oils were investigated. These oligomers are intermediate between polyisobutylene and polyalkyl methacrylate in improving the viscosity-temperature characteristics of the oils and are superior to them with respect to stability and thermal degradation.
