On two marine cyrtophorid ciliates from China, with description of Chlamydonella derouxi nov. spec. and Orthotrochilia pilula (Deroux, 1976) nov. comb., and reestablishment of the genus Orthotrochilia nov. gen. (Protozoa, Ciliophora, Cyrtophorida)

Abstract

The living morphology and infraciliature of two marine cyrtophorid ciliates from Qingdao coastal waters, north China, Chlamydonella derouxi nov. spec. and Orthotrochilia pilula (Deroux, 1976) nov. comb., have been investigated. The new species, Chlamydonella derouxi is characterized by: small marine Chlamydonellawith asymmetrical oval body shape and inconspicuous snout, about 20–30 × 12–20 μm in vivo; one finger-shaped tentacle located on right of median at the level of about posterior 1/3 of cell length; 2 contractile vacuoles diagonally positioned; totally 12 ventral kineties, in equatorial area one single basal body on the margin of each side; terminal fragment consisting of ca. 5 basal bodies; one macronucleus and 2 micronuclei, 13–16 cytopharyngeal rods. According to the rule of the ICZN (1999), reestablishment for the `non-existing' genus Orthotrochilianov. gen. has been made, it is characterized by: dorso-ventrally flattened with tail-shaped podite, oral structure reduced to 2 fragment-like kineties, postoral kineties making no gap in median with left ones strongly shortened posteriad; moveable podite present; macronucleus dimorphic. Based on the Qingdao population and on previous descriptions, an improved diagnosis for Orthotrochilia pilula (Deroux, 1976) nov. comb. is also suggested. Another nominal species formerly placed in the invalid genus is included again in Orthotrochilia: O. agamalievi (Deroux, 1976) nov. comb.
