Liquid phase benzylation of toluene using benzyl alcohol over iron promoted sulfated zirconia

Abstract

This paper discusses the benzylation of toluene with benzyl alcohol over iron promoted sulfated zirconia systems and the influence of the various reaction parameters on the catalytic activity and selectivity. Along with the benzylated product, benzyl ether, formed by the self-condensation of benzyl alcohol, was also obtained as a major side product.
