The Role of Volume Scattering in the Formation of Surface Reverberation in the Ocean

Radiophysics and Quantum Electronics Aims and scope

Abstract

We study the influence of sound-speed perturbations in a waveguide volume, originating from wind roughness, on the energy characteristics of scattered acoustic pulses. We show analytically and by numerical simulations that the pulse reverberation signals scattered by wind roughness in summer-type shallow-water channels significantly increase due to such perturbations. This effect stipulates the significant increase in the level of reverberation signals in the interval of small delay times. Dependences of the considered phenomenon on the wind velocity, the number of the received waveguide modes, and other parameters of the problem are analyzed.
