Special announcement

  • This summer, Chromosome Research will be publishing the second in its series of themed issues entitled ORGANIZATION INSIDE THE CELL NUCLEUS compiled and edited by Hans Lipps, and Christoph Cremer, Witten and Heidelberg, Germany. It will be published as issue 5 of volume 11. Look out for it. It promises to be a landmark publication in the fields of nuclear and chromosome biology and gene expression in eukaryotes. The following are the titles of contributions to this issue.

  • The principles of nuclear structure. Dean A. Jackson, Manchester, UK

  • Is DNA sequence sufficient to specify DNA replication origins in metazoan cells? Guiseppe Biamonti, Sonia Paixao, Alessandra Montecucco, Fiorenzo Antonio Peverali, Silvano Riva and Arturo Falaschi, Pavia and Trieste, Italy

  • Exploiting a minimal system to study the epigenetic control of DNA replication: the interplay between transcription and replication. Isa M. Stehle, Monica F. Scinteie, Armin Baiker, Andreas C.W. Jenke and Hans J. Lipps, Witten, Germany and Stanford, USA

  • Chromatin folding and gene expression: new tools to reveal the spatial organisation of genes. Karen E. Brown, London, UK

  • From DNA structure to gene expression: mediators of nuclear compartmentalization and dynamics. JÜrgen Bode, Sandra Goetze, Henry Heng, Stephen A. Krawetz and Craig Benham, Braunschweig, Germany, Detroit and UC Davis, USA

  • Transcription factories: quantitative studies of nanostructures in the mammalian nucleus. Sonya Martin and Ana Pombo, London UK

  • Spatial organization of gene expression: the active chromatin hub. Wouter de Laat and Frank Grosveld, Rotterdam, The Netherlands

  • Comparative analysis of functional genome architecture of animal and plant cell nuclei. Christoph Mayr, Zuzana Jasencakova, Armin Meister, Ingo Schubert and Daniele Zink, Munich, Berlin and Gatersleben, Germany

  • Three-dimensional arrangement of centromeres and telomeres in nuclei of human and murine Iymphocytes. Claudia Weierich, Alessandro Brero, Stefan Stein, Johann von Hase, Christoph Cremer, Thomas Cremer and Irina Solovei; Munich and Heidelberg, Germany

  • Conservation of chromosome arrangement and position of the X in mammalian sperm suggests functional significance. Ian K. Greaves, Willem Rens, Malcolm A. Ferguson-Smith, Darren Griffin and Jennifer A. Marshall Graves, Canberra and Bundoora, Australia and Cambridge and Brunel, England.

  • A genetic analysis of chromosome territory looping: diverse roles for distal regulatory elements. Tobias Ragoczy, Agnes Telling, Tomoyuki Sawado, Mark Groudine, and Steven T. Kosak, Seattle, Washington, USA

  • Nuclear microenvironments that support physiological control of gene expression. Gary S. Stein, Jane B. Lian, Martin Montecino, Jane L. Stein, Andre J. van Wijnen, Amjad Javed, Jitesh Prtap, Je Choi, Kaleem Zaidi, Soraya Gutierrez, Kimberley Harrington, Jiali Shen, Danile Young, Shirwin Pckwinse, Worcester, USA and Taegu, Korea

  • Four dimensional imaging of chromatin dynamics during the assembly of the interphase nucleus. Eric M.M. Manders, Astrid E. Visser, Arjen Koppen, Wim C. de Leeuw, Robert van Liere, Fred J. Brakenhoff and Roel van Driel, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
