Abstract
The stresses in an inclusion ahead of mode I crack are analyzed based on Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method. An expression for predicting brittle fracture toughness is developed from the critical stress in the inclusion. The predicted results are in good agreement with finite element analyses and experimental observations.
