Resonance Diffraction Radiation from Ultrarelativistic Particles

Abstract

A Smith–Purcell radiation from ultrarelativistic electrons on a “flat” grating made up of a set of conducting strips is considered. The proposed model treating the Smith–Purcell effect (SPE) as the resonance diffraction radiation makes it possible to estimate the SPE characteristics for small outgoing photon angles θ ≪ 1, where conventional approaches cannot be used due to computational difficulties. A new type of an optical grating, simple and technologically inexpensive, is proposed. It consists of parallel aluminum strips deposited onto a quartz substrate whose thickness is determined using the criterion of the minimum reflected intensity of optical radiation with a wavelength corresponding to SPE.
