Abstract

N 2 condensed into nanoporous glass has been investigated by X-ray diffraction and adsorption/filling isotherms. The material in the pores consists of an amorphous layer at the pore walls and quasi–bulk material in the center of the pores. The freezing temperature of the bulk component is reduced. Its structure is hcp down to lowest temperatures with a stacking fault probability as large as 0.3. Thus the transition hcp–Pa3 of the bulk solid is suppressed.
