Abstract
We investigate the phase composition of wear products on the sliding surface of boron carbide over steel by means of thermodynamic calculations as well as scanning electron microscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy. We show that graphitization on the friction surface is attributable to the decomposition of carbon monoxide.
