Mass Effects on Optical Phonons in L12-Ordered Pt3 57Fe and Pd3 57Fe

Abstract

Inelastic nuclear resonant scattering spectra of 57Fe atoms were measured on Pt3 57Fe and Pd3 57Fe with the L12 crystal structure, and with the same crystallographic sites for 57Fe atoms. Phonon partial density of states curves for 57Fe were obtained from these spectra. In comparison to the non-dispersive Einstein-like optical modes in Pt3 57Fe, the optical modes in Pd3 57Fe are broader. This difference can be understood in terms of the difference in mass of Pd and Pt.
