Mössbauer study of solid state reactions under mechanical grinding of the Fe2B and FeB borides

Abstract

At the first stage of grinding in a planetary ball mill the metastable (Fe2B)’ and α-FeB phases form irrespective of grinding conditions. At the following stages using the same materials of the vial and balls the decomposition solid state reaction occurs up to α-Fe and probably elemental B formation. The different materials of the vial and balls lead to homogeneous amorphization of the Fe2B and to heterogeneous amporphization of the FeB.
