Abstract
Lothar Bucher, one the most important figures in the 1848 German revolution and later Bismarcks's right hand, published a number of books, mainly travel reports, which have never been closely examined. The article shows that Bucher employed typical rhetorical or literary strategies to convey his political views. For him the aim justified any means. Bucher strongly influenced public opinion against other countries, especially Britain, to generate nationalistic feelings. He is an important figure not only within history and culture, but also in literary history, and should be considered in any future examination of literature in the 19th century.
