On the Interaction between Components of an Alloy during Its Dissolution in the Passive State

Abstract

A thermodynamic model relating the anodic behavior of an alloy to its components" interaction is compared with experimental data on the anodic behavior of passive Fe–Cr alloys with different Cr content. For passive alloys containing 20 to 100 at. % of Cr, the theory well agree with the experiment, which allows to think of the alloy components' interaction in the mixed passive oxides as a factor determining the alloys" corrosion resistance in their passive state. In the alloys containing less than 20 at. % of Cr, the components" interaction is likely to manifest itself through their microstructural effect on the active centers on dissolving surface.
