Abstract

The authors describe a semi-annual program formultidisciplinary peer review and supervision that is inuse at two rural adult and child mental health and drugand alcohol service agencies. The program incorporates semiannual chart reviews andface-to-face discussions held with each clinician by amultidisciplinary supervisory group. Several qualityimprovement issues addressed by this program aredescribed, including improved communication, improvedclinical diagnosis, the establishment of serviceparameters, more appropriate referrals for psychiatricand other medical care, and improved clinician skills. The program represents an inexpensive approachto peer review and supervision that can incorporateuniversity-based consultants, improve quality of care, improve clinicians' skills, and be readily applied by clinical supervisors to most behavioralhealth settings.
