Efficient laser operation of heavily doped Cr4+:forsterite

Abstract

Pulsed laser operation of a new high Cr4+ concentration forsterite crystal is reported. Slope efficiencies of 13% and 5% have been obtained for 1064 and 532nm pumping. Results are compared with the performance of three other forsterite crystals. A threefold enhancement in operating efficiency is obtained over standard low dopant-level material. Tuning ranges have also been investigated.
