Abstract

It is shown that an alternative version of Schro¨dinger theory based only on classical physical concepts makes possible a simple and direct derivation of Sommerfeld's fine-structure formula in an external field independent way in the general context of bound electronic states. It is thus demonstrated that this formula is of classical origin and of much greater generality than had previously been thought.
