Influence of Corrugation of Adsorption Potential on Competition of Multiple-Spin-Exchanges

Abstract

In the heat-capacity (C) measurements of submonolayer and low-density second layer 3He solid films adsorbed on graphite surfaces, anomalous C∝Tα (α≈−1) dependence has been observed in wide temperature ranges. It is attributed to the strong competition between several multiple spin exchange (MSE) interactions. And the competition is thought to be caused by the corrugation of adsorption potential of the substrate. The detailed analysis shows that the coverage-dependence of the exponent α has some features. These features can be explained by the change in strength of MSE competition due to the change of the adsorption structure, i.e., the existence of zero-point vacancy, commensurate-incommensurate phase transition, and some specific adsorption structures. This supports that the MSE competition is responsible to anomalous T-dependence of C.
