Superfluid 4He: Just a Very Cold Liquid?

Abstract

We present a unified description of the dynamic response of superfluid 4He using perturbation theory. We show that the characteristic features of the 4He inelastic neutron scattering spectra at T∼1 K can be fully described by considering only density fluctuations. We also discuss how the response changes when the temperature is raised through the superfluid phase to the normal-fluid phase, and we argue that these changes principally reflect the behavior expected because of the Bose statistics obeyed by all the 4He atoms rather than being effects of the depletion of the Bose condensate.
